Aloha BIUG members.
We had a successful meeting last Saturday at Bryan Luker’s very organized shop in Hawaiian Paradise Park - his neat-as-a-pin workspace bringing some degree of shame to at least one BIUG officer.
Twenty-two enthusiasts, including several new members, listened as Bryan offered solutions to ukulele building challenges, including cutting fret wire slots with a table saw, his shop-built binding router jig for cutting consistent binding channels, the use of carbon fiber rods to stabilize necks, a stationary router to shape them and the use of a bench sander for setting necks. Mahalo nui loa Bryan!
BIUG president Woodley White announced he is working with Andy Andrews, founder of the Puna 'Ukulele & Kanikapila Association (PUKA), to coordinate an ukulele music camp to run concurrent to our October BIUG show. Bob Gleason, our steadfast secretary/treasurer, will organize the affair. Further details to come.
BIUG member Patrick Inouye will again offer an ukulele lesson prior to our next general meeting June 9 at Woodley’s shop. Woodley will demonstrate his pantograph machine, which duplicates consistent neck shaping. Again, further details to come.
Following the general meeting at Bryan’s, a number of members shared current ukulele projects. We hope to soon have a number of photos from the meeting posted on our BIUG website.
We have a new batch of BIUG t-shirts and caps, so we are fairly well stocked again in all sizes.
And finally, the dates of our upcoming meetings have been changed from Saturdays to Sundays to accommodate more members. They are as follows:
June 9 at Woodley’s
September 15 at Dann Roark’s
Chris Stewart, BIUG vice president
