Aloha BIUG members.

Aloha BIUG members. We had a wonderful gathering yesterday at Sonia Edmund’s home. She and her family’s efforts made for a warm holiday party with good food, music and friendship. Mahalo nui loa Sonia!

Alan Hale lead a dozen us in a kanikaplia of Christmas songs, putting everyone in the holiday mood. The wine and beer may have helped, too. A big round of applause to Alan!

We finally put down our ukuleles, plates and glasses to conduct the last BIUG general meeting for this year. Builders crowded into Sonia’s garage, including several new members, as Woodley conducted his final meeting as president of the guild. He is tentatively planning a meeting in late January with the Kahilu Theatre Foundation in Waimea regarding a future show. Details to come. Thanks to Woodley for his efforts at making the BIUG a great organization.

Woodley will also continue with casual lunches around the island with members during 2014.

And he spoke about the 21st Guild of American Luthiers Convention/Exhibition in Tacoma, Washington. The dates are July 23-27, 2014. Members can read more about it on the guild’s website: http://www.luth.org/index.html. Look under the Conventions header for further info.

Elections of officers for 2014 followed. The results are:

  • Chris Stewart will again take the helm as president.
  • Woodley White stays on as vice-president
  • BIUG Webmaster Tom Russell is adding secretary/treasurer to his growing list of responsibilities.

Tom spoke for us all when he asked for more involvement from members to keep our guild growing and remaining active in 2014. He also encouraged members to take advantage of the BIUG Forum page of our website. It is a great source of builder’s information.

Bob Gleason will continue to oversee our annual BIUG shows and updated attending members about our 2013 Wailoa Center show. The show was well received, but its duration has caused some deterioration of the ukulele finishes and other damage. The Wailoa Center does not want the show to be shortened, so Bob suggested members build display cases to protect our ukuleles. We’ll continue with discussions about this during the year. Woodley suggested entry fees for members to offset show expenses.

Chris Stewart reported that the purchase of BIUG tank tops and shirts are a financial drain on the guild and suggested that once our current stock is sold out, that we continue selling only caps. If in the future, members are interested in shirts, we can always put together a pre-paid minimum order.

Dann ‘Professor Jigs’ Roark shared his collection of adjustable toggle clamps and then brought the crowd to its feet with his laminated neck demonstration, tips and his latest jig brings an ukulele headstock down to a consistent thickness using a router. Very cool! Dann always gets a great response for his efforts!

Finally, the 2014 BIUG meeting dates are tentatively set for Saturday, March 8th, June 14th, August 30th and December 13th. Details and locations to come.
